All these salons have well trained stylists and the rates are excellent. Enter without an appointment and leave an hour later looking like une vrais Parisianne. My haircut, shampoo and styling last week at Biguine, Bonne Nouvelle was 52 euros.

JEAN LOUIS DAVID

From their site: “The bob remains a timeless essential. This very feminine short cut comes in several lengths and shapes to suit all tastes. Focus on the A-line bob.

The Cut. The bob is a rather short cut which is full on all sides and finishes at the chin. The A-line bob, however, is short at the back and longer at the front. This is an unstructured cut, full of volume, that you can tailor to your taste since the gradient between the front and back is not set. For a designer look, you can leave very long strands at the front so they really contrast with the back of the cut. All types of hair and face shapes can look great with an A-line bob: fine hair in order to gain volume, straight hair for more structure, and even wavy hair for a pretty modern bohemian look. However, those with curly and frizzy hair should stay away from this cut to avoid the poodle look.”

Pont des Arts: those controversial love locks

Parisians have mixed feelings about these locks and whether they are to be removed is being tossed around by the city. Around the world lovers are attaching locks to bridges to symbolize their eternal love and throwing away the key. On the Pont de l’Archeveche near Notre Dame there are currently over 2,000. My guess is they’re only temporary and how they will be transferred to metallic trees, like in Russia, or whether talented French conceptual artists can come up with some other way to display them, only time will tell.

Sacre Coeur Dome: insider secret

How many tourists realize they can go higher than just the terrace at Sacre Coeur? The line this morning was scant, perhaps because of the season, the wet weather, the time of day (10 am). You can climb to the dome (300 steep curving claustraphobic steps) and crypt for 9 euros or choose just one for 6. The view is staggering and although the walls are scratched with messages and initials (some are love poems), it doesn’t spoil the experience. Photographers, start your engines. Your “No Worries Paris” guidebook will guide you to more adventures behind the Basilica.

Paris “A” List: Notre Dame

Napoleon had plans to demolish Norte Dame cathedral shortly after 1804 when he took the royal crown from the hands of Pope Pius VII and crowned himself emperor in the shadow of the great church. The general felt the ediface a monstrosity, built over six centuries at the hands of numerous architects. But author Victor Hugo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) later proclaimed the church a “symphony of stone” and his sentiments won the day. Numerous touches have been added in the nearly two centuries since Hugo’s days, mainly under the direction of 19C genius Eugene Violet le Duc, including the 300-foot-high steeple and the three portals of the entrance (west) facade.

With myriad integrated details inside and out, Notre Dame indeed contains the notes and overall bombast of a great musical work. Entrance to the cathedral is free, although a fee is charged to climb the 230-foot north tower to the belfry and walk among the gargoyles. In the parvis (plaza) in front is Point Zero, a bronze star imbedded in flagstone, from which all distances in France are measured. The site of Notre Dame on Ile de la Cite was also the location for the stronghold of the Parisii, the tribe of boatmen dating from around 300 BC, who were displaced by Julius Caesar and the Romans in 54 BC. In recent years, remnants from the Roman’s 3C city of Lutetia (as they called Paris) were discovered 200 feet below ground in the parvis. The parking lot has become a museum, Crypte Archelologique, just one of the bonus attractions that surround the cathedral. See page 38 of No Worries Paris for more photos and info.
