LuxembourgGardenParis

On the border between Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter, the Luxembourg Gardens, inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence, were created upon the initiative of Queen Marie de Medici in 1612. It’s a happy place full of kids, chair squatters, strolling conversationalists and lovers. My mood, my energy level, my fantasy dreams of Paris are always elevated here no matter what season.

The gardens are split into French gardens and English gardens. Between the two, lies a geometric forest and a large pond. There is also an orchard with a variety of old and forgotten apples, an apiary for you to learn about bee-keeping and greenhouses with a collection of breathtaking orchids and a rose garden. The garden has 106 statues spread throughout the park, the monumental Medici fountain, the Orangerie and the Pavillon Davioud.

Exit the Sèvres-Babylone Métro station, then orient yourself by turning in a circle to see the historic Bon Marché department store, Luteita Hotel, and luxuriously landscaped Boucicaut Park, a three-fer outing.

The garden honors the memory of Aristide Boucicaut, the creator of the famous Bon Marché. Around 1870, the shopkeeper launched a revolutionary concept: free entry, the fixed price, lower margins, home delivery, item exchange, mail order, promotional periods and sales, private concerts, a reading area and much more. He soon bought the land vacated by the cemetery Hospice of Little Houses and the cemetery of Saint-Sulpice, called the Trinity, in order to open his first store in Paris.

I digress to suggest a picnic on one of the park benches. The grandest of grand place for gourmet edibles, 30,000 of them: La Grande Epicerie de Paris is housed on the ground floor of the department store right across the street. They boast verifiably: “an unmissable treat, an unadulterated delight and a unique experience. I like to take away the cold marinated chicken brochettes. Perfect lap food, not too messy.

As for the Art Deco Lutetia, if it’s finished with it’s renovation, walk on in to drink in the ultra swank decor.

….1615. Its nearly 60 acres are adorned with a forest of leafy trees, some 80 statues, two fountains, tennis and boules courts, and the largest playground in Paris (French kids play loud and rough). The focus of this grand space is the Grand Bassin, a pond encircled by chairs, the surface of which normally floats a fleet of toy sailboats. Palais du Luxembourg, with its weighty Tuscan columns, lords over north end gardens. Designed by the queen in the style of the Pitti Palace of her native Florence, the building has housed the French Senate for two centuries. The palace became a Nazi headquarters during WWII.

From the fountain, curve right around the balustrade above the pond and continue through the park to exit on west side at Rue de Fleurus.

… This swing through the gardens to the west gate follows the path of Hemingway after his divorce from Hadley in 1926, when, drunk and tearful, he pushed her possessions in a wheelbarrow to her new residence at 35 rue de Fleurus. At #27 on the same street is the home of Gertrude Stein from 1903 to 1938. This is where Matisse met Picasso, and artists from all walks of life considered themselves lucky to come and enjoy the converstation and perhaps enjoy a hash brownie baked by Alice B. Toklas.”
