AT THE POMPIDOU

Poster_Pomp

From 6 April to 1 August 2016, the Pompidou Centre presents an exhibition on one of the 20th century’s leading artists: Paul Klee. This retrospective, featuring 250 works by this major figure of modern art, looks at the career of the artist through the prism of irony. Originating in early German Romanticism, this satire and detachment enabled Paul Klee to be creative and paint whilet at the same time denouncing the policies and ideologies of his time.

The exhibition is organized around seven themes: ‘Les débuts satiriques (Satirical Beginnings)’, ‘Klee et le cubisme (Klee and Cubism)’, ‘Théâtre mécanique (Mechanical Theatre)’, ‘Klee et les constructivismes (Klee and Constructivism)’, ‘Regards en arrière (Looking Back)’, ‘Klee et Picasso (Klee and Picasso)’ and ‘Années de crise (Crisis Years)’.

AT QUAI BRANLY MUSEUM

poster_Paris

PERSONA: Now until November 13, 2016

At a time of major debates on transhumanism and artificial intelligence, the Quai Branly Museum presents an exhibition for understanding the mechanisms by which the cultures of the ancient to the most contemporary, “inject person” in objects.

The shaman who summons the spirits through a statuette taking the features of the gods, the child who has a passion for his security blanket, all those who converse with the pet, mutual friend of everyday life … everywhere, the boundaries between the human and all that surrounds it seem more and more permeable, raising broader questions of cohabitation between man, object, animal and machine.

Musée du quai Branly
37 Quai Branly
75007 Paris 7

Closed on Monday
Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday: 11:00 am-07:00 pm
Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 11:00 am-09:00 pm

Vuitton

It’s genius: daring and innovation punctuated by surprises. A visit to Foundation Louis Vuitton is hard to put into words, you have to climb all the levels, admire the views, the architectural lines, it’s exhilarating.  Frank Gehry’s mission was to “design in Paris a magnificent vessel symbolizing the cultural calling of France. He succeeded.  I’ll let my photos speak for themselves.

Twelve glass sails play with the light and reflections of water from the basin in which the building stands. It’s a constant interplay of outside and inside and invites the visitor on a walk through a space of shifting perspectives to create a unique architectural experience.

What I like most about this museum: they’re always upgrading it. They call their present project Nouvel Orsay. From their website: “We are going to try and establish a different rhythm in the presentation, whilst still respecting the various “schools” and great artistic personalities. We will try to bring out more meaning, and introduce more stimulating questions […] It has to be surprising, thought-provoking. Through this new interdisciplinary approach, presenting the works in relation to other disciplines, we are getting back to the essence of the original project.

I would like to create the best possible conditions for the visitor to view the works in a way that is well informed, unconstrained and imaginative. The works will have more space; the display cases will be less intrusive. They will invite dialogue with the artists all around them. The presentation will be more “polyphonic”; the categories will be less assertive”.

fashionParis1950

The 1950s was haute couture’s golden age. A new exhibit at the Palais Galleria retraces the evolution of the female form through the decade 1947–1957: from the birth of the New Look to the death of Christian Dior and the advent of Yves Saint Laurent.

Petticoats, corolla skirts, pointed shoes, bright-coloured floral and striped prints, wasp-waist suits with straight skirts, strapless sheath dresses, cocktail dresses, rock crystal embroidery, Chanel’s straight lined simple suits: such was the couture of the fifties.

Lucky you if you’re in Paris now or will be coming before November 2. Les années 50 : La mode en France, 1947-1957, is at Palais Galliera, 10, avenue Pierre Ier de Serbie, 16th arrondissement. Open Monday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm. Open Thursday evenings until 9pm.

Petit Palais Exhibit 2014

Happening now at the Petit Palais is a Belle Époque Paris extravaganza inviting the public to relive the splendour of the French capital at the time when the Paris Exposition Universelle was heralding the arrival of the 20th century. More than ever before, Paris was seen throughout the world as a sparkling city of luxury with a sophisticated way of life. Over 600 works will plunge visitors into a charged atmosphere when talents from everywhere were converging on the French capital to train in studios, to exhibit in the salons and sell their wares in the expanding network of art galleries. On view are paintings, objets d’art, costumes, posters, photographs, films, furniture, jewelery and sculptures. The technical inventions, the cultural effervescence, and the sheer elegance of Parisian women will be staged and displayed as representative legends of that Paris whose image has been promoted in literature and the cinema throughout the world.

Paris’s treasured attic: Musée Carnavalet

French formal gardens, Marcel Proust, Musee Carnavalet, No Worries Paris, Paris budget, Paris history, Paris museums

carnavaletmusee

Located on the Right Bank in the Marais is a museum housing the history of Paris. The exterior with it’s dripping vines, roses and French formal gardens screams “photo op!” Digesting all there is to see in one visit (and it’s free) is almost an impossible feat, but worth a try.

As visitors wander through re-creations of rooms in styles ranging from the 17th to the 20th century, they can follow developments in Parisian interior design, immerse themselves in revolutionary history from the French Revolution to the Paris Commune, and also enter into the private lives of famous Parisians, imagining for example, the Marquise de Sévigné at her Chinese laquerwork desk penning her famous letters, or even Marcel Proust in his bedroom, dividing his time between his brass bed and his little table covered in pens, ink and notebook, peruse Eugène Atget and Henri Cartier-Bresson photographs.

Musee Carnavalet

Georges Fouquet’s jewelry boutique, the Alphonse Mucha collection, primo examples of Art Nouveau, 2,600 paintings, 20,000 drawings, 300,000 engravings and 150,000 photographs, 2,000 modern sculptures and 800 pieces of furniture, thousands of ceramics, and the lavish Art Deco ballroom from the hôtel de Wendel, which was painted in 1925 by José-Maria Sert….exhausting yes, but one of the reasons you’ve come to Paris. It’s essence is here in “old-time”. The Louvre’s second little cousin.

Before your visit, my advice is to bone up on the city’s fascinating history, then tackle the 100 creaky floored rooms in bite sized pieces.
