pucesbootsAfter trudging around the flea market all morning you’ll want to take a well deserved break. Head for the Paul Bert market and there you’ll find Philippe Starck’s restaurant La Cocotte (sweetheart, my little chickadee).

No Worries Paris

The 250-seat cafeteria/industrial/chic eatery will turn your shopping experience into an event. All the furniture was sourced within 260 feet from the restaurant so the carbon imprint is almost negative. There are large tables, deep sofas and plenty of books. The eclectic mix of finds and comfort food make this cozy nest a hangout you’ll find hard to leave.

How to insult a Paris restaurant

First on the list is capturing what you’ve been served with your camera or IPhone. Rude, rude, rude, an insult to chefs who consider themselves artists, don’t appreciate being copied or having a bad photo of something they’ve created spread across social media. Adding to that, some guests startle others at nearby tables with their flash and some go so far as to style the setting by moving chairs, tableware, other customers. Food porn? Sacre bleu!

Then there are the clients who ask for a doggie bag, call the waiter “garçon” and ask for butter for you know what. When in any country, a good general rule is to read up on the customs before you go. Be a respectful traveler. Some basic rules are in the No Worries Paris guide.

The service is immaculate, the food sublime. Sitting where Colette’s derrière once warmed the banquette is a total buzz. The finest gourmet rendez-vous of the Parisian political, artistic and literary society for more than 200 hundred years.

But hang on to your chapeaus, for lunch a fixed-price menu is proposed in addition to the main menu. 96 € menu (lunch only) and 298 € Menu Plaisir – average menu meal is 200-220 €. Make it the meal of your lifetime. Tell them Queen Janine sent you.

American fix: The $29 burger at Ralph’s

Hunger pangs while cashmere shopping at Ralph Lauren’s new St. Germain store? Now you can take a break at his in-house restaurant for the uber-rich. The decor has that patio feel, that back in the USA moment and so does the menu. Besides the perfectly seared juicy hamburger: le club, $24; cobb salad, $28; lobster salad, $35. Luxe presentation, beautiful servers with a French twist.

Save room for America’s favorite desserts: brownies and vanilla ice cream, new york cheese cake, five layer chocolate cake, carrot cake, key lime pie all priced at just $14.

If you’re feeling it’s a tad overbudget and want something a little on the fast-food gourmet side a few metro stops away, try the Charolais/chevre burger at McDonald’s for 2 euros with a charming view of the Austerlitz train station. Follow it up with a 2 euro strawberry frappe. I noticed on the website they’re featuring other petite Charolais options: melted Emmental and sauce Bearnaise, Charolais Cantal sauce au poivre, Charolais au sauce bleu fondu. I’m loving’ it!

Hello terrine de foie gras, chutney de coingns . . .huitres en tartare, bouillon cresson, wasabi-soja. . .cochon de lait, poires-celeri-chataignes . . .
souffle au Grand Marnier, caramel au beurre sale . . . andouillette tempura with perch sashimi and béarnaise sauce . . . crudo of scallop with sea urchin and horseradish snow.

Bistronomy is overshadowing classic haute cuisine and the new French gastronauts are totally embracing the movement. Seeking out these bistrots gourmands ain’t easy but for starters here’s a short list: Septime, 80, rue de Charonne in the 11th; La Maison du Jardin, 27, rue de Vaugirard, in the 6th; Le Bal Cafe (place de Clichy); Pramil, 9 rue du Vertbois in the 3rd; Le Galopin, 34 rue Sainte-Marthe in the 10th, Roseval in the 20th, Le Pantruche in the 9th; Frenchie, 5, rue du Nil, in the 2nd; Bistrotters, 9, rue Decres in the 14th; Restaurant Pierre Sang, 55 rue Oberkampf, in the 11th; and La Veraison 64 Rue de la Croix Nivert in the 15th.

Lunch with the locals at Marche Des Enfants Rouge

From the No Worries Paris guidebook (follow their walking map):

“Double-back to Rue de Bretagne and go left. Pass Ruelle Sourdis de Beauce.

With delectables to delight foodies and a small garden in support of today’s grow-where-you-live trend, Le Marche Enfants Rouge seems contemporary. But it is the oldest still-active food market in Paris, built in 1615 under Louis XIII. Its intriguing name derives from an orphanage from back then, where the children wore red uniforms.

enfantsrougeparis2

Both fresh and prepared foods are sold in the enclosed market, which manages to fit in tables made cheery under light from a glass-and-wrought-iron ceiling. Organic produce and fresh flowers are worthy of a portrait. Standard French cheeses, crepes, seafood, and meats are balanced by a range of ethnic fare (Asian, Moroccan, Cajun, Italian). Locals hang here amid a convivial atmosphere, and the few tourists who wander in are welcomed.”

Something new on the menu here is sure to please those looking for a quick satiating meal a la McDonald’s. It’s the Casse-Croute (break-bread) and it comes with a medium soft drink for just four and a half euros. You’ve got three choices:

mcdonaldscassecroute

The Oriental is a sandwich consisting of a small baguette baked on stone, 2 potato pancakes, 2 specialty beef patties and Eastern seasoned sauce.

Chicken-Pepper is a sandwich consisting of a small baguette baked on stone, 2 potato pancakes, 2 crispy chicken patties and pepper sauce.

Mixte is a small baguette baked on stone, 2 potato patties, 2 slices of ham, 2 slices of Emmental cheese and cheese sauce.

How can you go wrong? Kind of a Subway sandwiche a la francaise. Only you can be the judge. To locate the McDonald’s closest to your apartment or hotel click here. This is not an advertisement, the suggestion is my own.

Sometimes the ol’ feet give up and it’s time to recharge. Thanks to one of our readers, Patty Brissenden, innkeeper at Sorensen’s Resort in Hope Valley, California, her salad/beer/guidebook shot was preserved for posterity. As you can see, she’s ready to dig right in after quenching her thirst. The stop:

Mouff’tôt Mouff’tard
71, Route Mouffetard
5th arrondissement
tel: 01 47 07 91 58
metro: Monge

Highly recommended, prices very reasonable. Ambiance A+.

Bonjour and bienvenue to the City of Light.
Illustrated by more than 300 color photographs, No Worries Paris takes readers on a visually luscious journey to the city s striking monuments, as well as into the cobblestone crannies of its villages and along the glamorous fashion boulevards.

Virtually all of Paris is covered in 10 Walking Tours, each with its own map. Walks take from a half-day to a day to complete, starting at one Metro stop and ending at another. The tours are complemented by 10 Promenades, which are shorter in length, taking in the sights around a single attraction, mainly on the fringes of city’s arrondissiments. No Worries Paris is sure to meet expectations the famous sights s of Paris but it is also full of surprises at out-of-the way places.

Of Midi-Pyrenees heritage, Janine Duchein Sprout started photographing Paris during her student days, beginning a lifelong passion that has sustained many subsequent visits. The images do far more than illustrate the text. She has captured the many nuances of Paris with portraits that tell stories sure to lure readers in a way that words cannot. Each walk is a photographic exhibit unto itself. About half the pages are devoted to photographs.

Writer Jerry Sprout adds a text that manages to be both concise and rich with facts and vignettes. The text offers enough detail to make the walks interesting while not getting bogged down in exposition. Key locales of French history are covered, spanning centuries and involving famous figures from the breadth of Europe. Walks also point out the former hangouts of artists, writers, actors, and performers. Particular attention is paid to the many well-known Americans who have made Paris a calling. Walks visit street markets, notorious restaurants, and many film locations. The world of shopping is well represented glamorous stores, chic boutiques and galleries, as well as vintage passages.

No Worries Paris has enough content to cover several visits. Practical travel tips and get-around information are included. Newcomers will most likely want to begin with monumental strolls. Francophiles may choose something more edgy and out-of-the-way.

The common thread is that each walk is along a visually aesthetic pathway that has a story of its own to tell. Readers who want to get to know Paris by seeing it on foot pausing occasionally for a gourmet taste or perfumed sniff along the way have found the right guide

Paris cafe etiquette: tipping

It takes some getting used to because servers are paid a living wage whereas they are paid next to nothing in the states and depend on tips. Perhaps this is why you might be given the cold shoulder: waiting is all business, not about attentive service with a smile and being rewarded for it. By law a 15% service compris is always included at cafes and restaurants so don’t feel you’re snubbing the wait staff. Do leave some extra change after a drink or even after a meal but don’t go overboard. Get out of the 20 percent tipping habit and don’t feel guilty.
