Place: Montmartre Service: Portraits Fee: 50-60 euros with room to haggle. Experience: Unique souvenir of your trip to Paris.

From No Worries Paris, page 134: “The tourist action peaks at Place du Tertre, a fairly large square made intimate by open-air restaurants and an artist’s bazaar that share its center. Some 140 licensed artists hawk portraits, kitsch landscapes, and silhouettes. Village shops and restaurants surround the place, which hums into the night. Chez la Mere Catherine, dates from 1793.”

“Aside from the hubbub of normal commerce, the procession of street workers on Rue St. Denis are of two types: men in overalls with hand-trucks transporting bolts of fabric, and “ladies of the night,” who are spaced evenly in broad daylight along the sidewalk and tarted-up like Christmas trees. Parisians seem to take little note of either (no photos without permission). You might want to continue down Rue St. Denis a little before doubling back to slightly shabby Passage du Caire. Crowds of nude mannequins and all sorts of shelving and racks are behind the windows of this long passage, which supplies retail stores.” – from the pages of the No Worries Paris walking guide.

A visit to Paris’s “Sinister Way”

Rue Roquette Paris

From the pages of the No Worries Paris guidebook: “The restaurants and bistros amplify on Rue de la Roquette. But in the 17C, Roquette was but a rural road leading to the large domain of a convent of the same name—which derives from a pale yellow flower, “the rocket,” that thrived in the rubble beside the road. At the time of the Revolution and for a century thereafter, Roquette was known as the “Sinister Way,” or “Sorrowful Road.” It connected the prison at Bastille to the new cemetery at Pere Lachaise, passing two other prisons, both a men’s and women’s. Funerals and bawdy public executions by guillotine were frequent. To your right as you reach the Roquette, at #76, is Theatre de La Bastille, where the quarter’s new vibe is apparent in dance and drama performances that warp and create trends.”

Try the popular city-sponsored bike rental system Velib. To subscribe by the day or week use the automatic computer terminal located at the bike station or even faster, go online. Search in advance for a station near you by entering your address at the Velib internet site. A credit or debit card with PIN is required and must contain an EMV chip in order to work.

The first half hour is free, second half hour costs one euro, third 30 minutes two euros and subsequent 30 minutes, four euros. There are bike stations located every few hundred meters throughout the city. Certain thoroughfares are closed to motorized traffic on weekends. Along the Right Bank of the Seine from Tuileries to Pont Charles De Gaulle and the banks of Canal St. Martin are among my favorite spins. Tip: if a bicycle seat is turned backwards, don’t rent it, a former rider has found it defective.
