Notre Dame Cathedral: taking it to the top

Gargoyles of Notre Dame

The best views of Paris can be seen from the Eiffel Tower, Pantheon, Tour Montparnasse, Sacre Coeur, Arc de Triomphe and least visited because of space limitations, Notre Dame towers. Get there at 10 and you’ll have no trouble winding your way up the 387 claustraphobic stairs to hobnob with the gargoyles and see the historic bell. It costs 8.50 euros but if you have a Paris Pass there’s no charge (this doesn’t mean you can cut into the front of line).

Getting there early means better air clarity and no one in the way when you Instagram your Selfie. Warding off evil since 1362, these grotesque monsters are now becoming 21st century instant celebs.

This is one of the highlights on your first walk in the No Worries Paris guidebook. Consult for more interesting sights in the vicinity.

How to insult a Paris restaurant

First on the list is capturing what you’ve been served with your camera or IPhone. Rude, rude, rude, an insult to chefs who consider themselves artists, don’t appreciate being copied or having a bad photo of something they’ve created spread across social media. Adding to that, some guests startle others at nearby tables with their flash and some go so far as to style the setting by moving chairs, tableware, other customers. Food porn? Sacre bleu!

Then there are the clients who ask for a doggie bag, call the waiter “garçon” and ask for butter for you know what. When in any country, a good general rule is to read up on the customs before you go. Be a respectful traveler. Some basic rules are in the No Worries Paris guide.

Another advantage: gather your tax refunds all in one place. If you are a non-European Union resident, you are entitled to claim back the 12% tax paid on purchases made. You must meet the following criteria:
– Reside outside of the European Union and be over the age of 16
– Present a valid passport and original cash register receipts
– The tax refund form must be completed on the day of purchase without fail
– A 12% refund will be made on purchases over €175 made in the same store on the same day excluding foodand drink
– Purchases made at certain brands* cannot be combined with purchases made in the rest of the store. *Louis Vuitton, Rolex-Tudor, Chanel (excludes fragrances)
– You must be staying in Europe for less than 6 months
– Final date for exiting the EU is 3 months

Once you have made purchases over 175 Euros, make your way to the Tax Refund Desk with your original cash register receipts and passport
– Choose your preferred method of reimbursement
– The store will issue you with a tax refund form

On leaving the EU your tax refund form must be validated by Customs at the airport, train station or border point within 3 months of the purchase date

Before checking in your luggage, you should present your refund form with your purchases, passport and travel documents for inspection by Customs. Failure to adhere to these conditions will result in cancellation of the refund and a possible fine.

Once the refund form has been validated by Customs, if you have chosen to receive a cash refund, please make your way to the designated desk at the airport, station or border point. For all other methods of reimbursement you should post off the blue form signed by Customs in the pre-paid envelope provided within 6 months. You should retain the other copy as proof of purchase.

Tired of walking Paris? Take a bus ride

parisBus

Sometimes there’s more daylight left but your feet won’t cooperate to make more tracks. A solution is taking the bus, same price as a metro ticket with a lot more flavor and scenic opportunity. The inside is as interesting as the outside on certain routes.

Here’s how: go to Paris’s main transportation website: http://www.ratp.fr/en/ratp/c_21879/tourists/

click on: Finding Your Way in Paris

fill in: The bus stop closest to your apt where you will get on, then your destination. It will show you the route to get there. Or you can do the same thing with the metro.

The site also has a big route map of where the buses go. Make sure you get a window seat nearest the driver. He can help you with getting off at the right stop. It is common courtesy to say “Bonjour” (“hello,” used in the morning and afternoon) or “Bonsoir” (“hello,” used in the evening) to the bus driver.

Best routes for sightseeing: 69, 63, 24 and 87. Take it to the end (usually not a terribly hospitable place but ask the bus driver where the bus stop is for the return trip: le retour).

To catch a bus, climb aboard and simply insert your ticket (use the same T+ ticket as the métro) in the slot machine upon entering (validate). If you don’t have a ticket, no worries, the drivers will take coins and the cost of a single ticket is about €1.90. If you’re planning to use the bus and métro often during your stay in Paris, consider purchasing a carnet, or book, of 10 tickets to save some money or check into the different. Even longer, buy a Navigo pass. And away you go!
