Zipping around Paris taking in all the events, art exhibits, new restaurants, new attractions never gets tiring. It’s all the work when I arrive back home and have to update my Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Tumbler and blog accounts. Complaining, I’m not, it’s a gig many have told me they’re envious of. I understand. After many years as a graphic designer, secretary, stone mason, aerobic dance teacher, chocolate chip cookie baker, and photographer, life has just worked out that way.

While in Paris I had one minute of fame. Crawling the internet at night post Balmain show I came across the Vogue Magazine online site. Lo and behold there I was on point shooting one of the cognoscenti. Thank you staff photographer Phil Oh who included it in his “Best Street Photos from Paris Fashion Week.” It made my day, my year, though I guess that’s my ego speaking.

Okay, enough about that. Time to get onboard and sell some books.  No Worries Paris is on the shelf at Powell’s Books.    Amazon.com too, of course or at www.trailblazertravelbooks.com. Thanks for giving it some consideration, it’s a pretty helpful walking guide to have along.

LuxembourgGardenParis

On the border between Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter, the Luxembourg Gardens, inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence, were created upon the initiative of Queen Marie de Medici in 1612. It’s a happy place full of kids, chair squatters, strolling conversationalists and lovers. My mood, my energy level, my fantasy dreams of Paris are always elevated here no matter what season.

LuxembourGardenParis1

The gardens are split into French gardens and English gardens. Between the two, lies a geometric forest and a large pond. There is also an orchard with a variety of old and forgotten apples, an apiary for you to learn about bee-keeping and greenhouses with a collection of breathtaking orchids and a rose garden. The garden has 106 statues spread throughout the park, the monumental Medici fountain, the Orangerie and the Pavillon Davioud.

Though you don’t spot many tourists with them, binoculars can be a good thing. Don’t always rely on your telephoto. Ever thought of ditching your camera, not recording what you see mechanically and absorbing the entire scene with your heart, soul, mind? Some curiosities you might spot on the way. Wishing you many happy souvenirs, experiences and memories.

Paris heavy metal at Pont Des Arts

Pont Des Arts Paris

The bridge railings are weighted down with love locks, some long necked ones holding 6 or seven more in a tower formation. There seems to be no more room. On this visit I notice something new, grafittied panels where hundreds of precious locks used to reside. Then upon leaving I see a sign silkscreened in blue below the steps leading to the bridge. Very worn and almost illegible it states “#lovewithoutlocks.  Our bridges can no longer withstand your gestures of love. NO MORE LOVE LOCKS! Unchain your love on lovewithoutlocks.paris.fr“. When I visited this site here’s what it said: “An end to padlocks: through this site, declare your love in pictures and bridges will be spared a heavy heart. Share your photos on social network sites with the hashtag #lovewithoutlocks and they will appear on this social wall to lovers worldwide!”

Passing under the bridge as I snap a photo there’s a doubled up barge with scrap metal going by. Heavy metal all right.

love locks Paris

On the bridge is a man conspicuously selling locks on the walkway and a young woman belting out songs accompanied by her sound system. It’s only after I examine the photo closely that I see she is blind or partially sighted. No one seems to be stopping to listen even though her delivery is soulful, above average. Her name is Sandrine Dubois and her CD’s for sale are in a yellow box.

Pont des Arts, 75006 Paris, France. There’s always something entertaining going on here.

Tour Eiffel: the world’s most viewed attraction

Eiffel Tower, No Worries Paris, paris blog, Paris monuments, paris walks

The sane approach is with the No Worries Paris guide.

tour eiffel no worries paris

Perhaps the world’s most beloved and recognized structure, the Tour Eiffel was not received warmly by most Parisians when it was built as part of Exposition Universalle in 1889. Some 300 artists and civic leaders signed a petition of protest. Later, novelist Guy de Maupassant used to lunch on top, since it was “the only place in Paris where I don’t have to see it.” Colleague Alexandre Dumas called the “hollow candlestick” a “work of uselessness.” Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the framework for the Statue of Liberty, won a contest among engineers to build a tower of 1,000 feet, which was nearly twice as high as the Washington Monument, then the world’s tallest.

A communications tower on top brings today’s height to 1,063 feet, the tallest structure in Paris. It was scheduled to be torn down and scrapped after 20 years, but meteorologists and communications scientists won a plea to let it stand. Find a spot amid digital shutterbugs directly underneath the tower and look up to behold the stats: Under Eiffel’s direction, some 300 workers labored for two years (incurring zero fatal accidents) to assemble 18,000 pieces of prefabricated iron lattice weighing a total of 10,000 tons with more than 2.5 million rivets. The project came in under budget and a week early. It is the world’s most-viewed attraction with nearly 300 million visitors, coming these days at a rate of ten million per year. The first level is at 187 feet, the second at 377 feet (these two reachable via stairs), and the top is lofted at 899 feet—where wind sways the structure up to five feet.

TIPS FOR VISITING TOUR EIFFEL: Given the essential sights on the remainder of this walk, you’ll probably want to save an ascent for another day. To avoid lines and save time, arrive a little before it opens, normally at 9:30. It’s cheaper and faster, given the lines, to walk the first two levels, which takes about 15 minutes. If you want to go to the top, you can buy an elevator ticket in addition to the stairway ticket (at the south tower). To ride all the way to the top (you have to get out at the second level anyway), use the east tower ticket booth. Don’t miss the cinema and museum on the first level. The second level is ringed by two viewing decks, and the height is just right to check out the sights of the city, laid out like a 3D model. Since Paris has a seven-story height limit on buildings, the well-known monuments are plainly visible. Many people will want to reach the top as a matter of principle, but the airborne view is less intimate. At night, on the hour, Tour Eiffel turns into a light show. Closing time can be as late as midnight, varying with the season.

Find your way to Bercy Park on the outskirts of Paris (128 quai de Bercy 12th arr.) From May to November it is a garden wanderer’s paradise. In deep winter, it is a place of solace, contemplation. You definitely want to keep walking with your hands in your pockets with a follow up at one of the wine bars at the foot of the park.

bercyjardin

Through the seasons the three landscapes change color and drama. The Romantic Garden features fishponds and dunes; the Flowerbed Garden is dedicated to plant life (I like the formal roses, labyrinth and scented garden); and “The Meadows” are an area of open lawns shaded by tall trees.

Allow for at least 3 hours of your day. Not on the average tourist beat, worth the effort.

belleville2

Big expansive murals, detailed mosaics, blaring neon messages in every language, an outdoor museum like no other in Paris. A street worth perusing just around the corner from the Belleville metro. Photographers will have a field day here.

belleville4

This multi-cultural neighborhood is worth exploring just for the Tunisian, Chinese, Vietnamese, African, Ethiopian, Moroccan restaurants alone. You’ll almost forget that you’re in Paris.

belleville

Embrace the grungy underground. Get out your spray can (or borrow one on the street) and add your personal squiggly rant. Just don’t expect it to be there when you return on your next visit. Street art: an ever-changing gallery.
