In 1999 the Musée de l’Affiche was renamed Musée de la Publicité (Museum of Advertising) and moved to permanent exhibition rooms at Place Palais du Louvre on rue de Rivoli. The core of the collection covers the history of posters worldwide from the origins to the present day. There are about 50,000 French and foreign period posters covering a period from the mid 18th century to 1949 and roughly 50,000 contemporary posters donated by advertising agencies, advertisers and graphic designers. There are also film, TV and radio commercials from the 1930’s to today. Artist and brand exhibits rotate thematically and three or four temporary exhibitions take place during the year.

With always something new to see, you’ll want to pay more than one visit to fully digest the collection. Designers, artists, photographers, social scientists, this is for you.

Galerie Vivienne, from 1823. Enter through the neoclassical stucco friezes and walk the marble-mosaic floors past esoteric boutiques, galleries, and antiquarian bookstores. The gallery makes a right-angle and drops to a lower section, all of it in the natural glow from skylights. Make it a passageway afternoon adventure by following the walking directions in the No Worries Paris guide. This is one of many and they all connect up. A good rainy day activity.
