Try the popular city-sponsored bike rental system Velib. To subscribe by the day or week use the automatic computer terminal located at the bike station or even faster, go online. Search in advance for a station near you by entering your address at the Velib internet site. A credit or debit card with PIN is required and must contain an EMV chip in order to work.

The first half hour is free, second half hour costs one euro, third 30 minutes two euros and subsequent 30 minutes, four euros. There are bike stations located every few hundred meters throughout the city. Certain thoroughfares are closed to motorized traffic on weekends. Along the Right Bank of the Seine from Tuileries to Pont Charles De Gaulle and the banks of Canal St. Martin are among my favorite spins. Tip: if a bicycle seat is turned backwards, don’t rent it, a former rider has found it defective.

Paris “A” List: Notre Dame

Napoleon had plans to demolish Norte Dame cathedral shortly after 1804 when he took the royal crown from the hands of Pope Pius VII and crowned himself emperor in the shadow of the great church. The general felt the ediface a monstrosity, built over six centuries at the hands of numerous architects. But author Victor Hugo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) later proclaimed the church a “symphony of stone” and his sentiments won the day. Numerous touches have been added in the nearly two centuries since Hugo’s days, mainly under the direction of 19C genius Eugene Violet le Duc, including the 300-foot-high steeple and the three portals of the entrance (west) facade.

With myriad integrated details inside and out, Notre Dame indeed contains the notes and overall bombast of a great musical work. Entrance to the cathedral is free, although a fee is charged to climb the 230-foot north tower to the belfry and walk among the gargoyles. In the parvis (plaza) in front is Point Zero, a bronze star imbedded in flagstone, from which all distances in France are measured. The site of Notre Dame on Ile de la Cite was also the location for the stronghold of the Parisii, the tribe of boatmen dating from around 300 BC, who were displaced by Julius Caesar and the Romans in 54 BC. In recent years, remnants from the Roman’s 3C city of Lutetia (as they called Paris) were discovered 200 feet below ground in the parvis. The parking lot has become a museum, Crypte Archelologique, just one of the bonus attractions that surround the cathedral. See page 38 of No Worries Paris for more photos and info.

Pop up at the Vanves metro stop on the weekend and you’ll find 300 flea market stall holders nonchalantly awaiting your browse-by. Be aware they all close down around 1 p.m. I like the scene here, the small scale, the neighborhoody feel, the expectation of getting a bargain. Expect to discover vintage clothing, ceramics, jewelry, war memorbilia, art deco, photography, paintings, fabric, lace, dolls. glassware, books, 50s and 60s curios, old magazines, furniture, toys and that perfect trinket to bring home and remember your trip to Paris.

A sublime rendezvous at Restaurant Bagatelle

A suggestion for a unique getaway deep in the Bois de Boulogne, the Bagatelle Restaurant. Open year round it is housed in the former stables belonging to the Bagatelle Chateau and surrounded by exquisite gardens filled with roses and exotic plants. A place to wander and drink up history. The only downside is that it’s complicated to reach. After taking all the possible routes, this one seems the most simple and direct: From central Paris, métro line-1 to Porte Maillot. Surface where the signs direct you to the bus. Take bus 244 to the “Bagatele-Pré Catalan” stop. Gather your courage and ask the bus driver to signal you when the stop approaches.

If you use the bus Itinéraire on the RATP website to Jardins de Bagatelle you can click on the map for walking directions/map. Depending on your starting point, you could take Bus 43 or Bus 244. Either way, you’d have to walk from the bus stop to the entrance of the Park and locate the restaurant within. Opening hours : 11:30am-2:30pm, 8pm-10pm. The food and service are so-so but the atmosphere makes up for it.
