Give Paris for Christmas: a subtle hint

NoWorriesParis_Christmas

The perfect gift for every Francophile on your list. Order it on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Powells.com or trailblazertravelbooks.com (get it personally signed), your favorite independent bookstore, or buy the ebook for yourself on iBooks.

Feedback from happy readers:

“My husband and I loved this book! We spent 2 weeks in an apartment in Paris and were looking to explore areas that were off the beaten path. This book became our favorite! I have been to Paris numerous times and love exploring the city. This time we used No Worries Paris and it was no question our favorite to find out-of-the-way surprises along our daily walks. On one such walk my husband quipped that the author must be friends with Jillian Michaels (the workout maven) because we did so many stairs! We found many treasures along the way and when describing our trip to friends and family, they would comment that we should be “history teachers” because they were amazed at what we learned! I ended up losing the book on one of our last adventures, but the minute I got home I ordered another copy just to have for future adventures.” – G.Z.

“I have been a faithful reader of the posts on “No worries Paris” blogs and was very excited to see their compilation handbook. If you love Paris, I mean REALLY love all things about Paris, this is a must-read. This walking guide takes you to all areas and interests of Paris and includes beautiful, artistic photos and helpful maps. Some of the picture headings are obscured and hard to read, but this is a minor problem with the book.
As a Francophile who has lived in Paris and has taken yearly trips since 2004, I have used many guidebooks. I can honestly say that this is one of the most useful guides for Parisian visitors!”  R.K.L.

“A meaty book full of photos and maps that far surpasses any of the standard walking guides for Paris. The authors have designed a novel way to see the sights starting and ending at various metro stations and meandering through the neighborhoods. Each walk starts out with a short historical overview then follows up with turn by turn directions. Beautiful.”  E.L.

No snow yet but ice skating is ON right now in Paris. The incredible setting is the Grand Palais. For 15 euros (adults) and 10 euros (children 3 to 12) you can strap on skates which are included in the price and glide around under the fanciful glass roof. Musical animations plus light show at night, hot drinks, catering points and at night it turns into a dance floor.  Who can ask for anything more.

Visit Paris’s historic City Hall and take in the Paris Haute Couture exhibit in the Salle Saint-Jean which ends July 6. It’s free. About a hundred masterpieces from the Galliera Museum will be showcased: Doucet, Lanvin, Patou, Chanel, Rochas, Jacques Heim, Dior, Gaultier, Lacroix, Alaia, Balenciaga, Gres, Courreges, Schiaparelli, Balmain, Molyneux, Carven to name a few.

hoteldevilleparis

A little history about the elaborate building:

Ever since 1357, the City of Paris’s administration has been located at the same location where the Hôtel de Ville stands today.

1533: King Francis I decided to endow the city with a city hall which would be worthy of Paris, then the largest city of Europe. Building work was not finished until 1628 during the reign of Louis XIII.

1835: on the initiative of Rambuteau, préfet of the Seine département, two wings were added to the main building and were linked to the facade by a gallery, to provide more space for the expanded city government.

1871: The Paris Commune chose the Hôtel de Ville as its headquarters, and as anti-Commune troops approached the building, Communards set fire to the Hotel destroying almost all extant public records from the French Revolutionary period. The blaze swallowed the building from the inside, leaving only an empty stone shell.

1873-1892: Reconstruction of the interior. Some 230 sculptors were commissioned to produce 338 individual figures of famous Parisians on each facade, along with lions and other sculptural features. Rodin produced the figure of the 18th-century mathematician Jean le Rond d’Alembert, finished in 1882

Open every day from 10am to 7pm (except Sundays and bank holidays)
Access:
Hôtel de Ville
Salle Saint-Jean, 5 rue de Lobau, Paris 4th arrondissement

Tired of walking Paris? Take a bus ride

parisBus

Sometimes there’s more daylight left but your feet won’t cooperate to make more tracks. A solution is taking the bus, same price as a metro ticket with a lot more flavor and scenic opportunity. The inside is as interesting as the outside on certain routes.

Here’s how: go to Paris’s main transportation website: http://www.ratp.fr/en/ratp/c_21879/tourists/

click on: Finding Your Way in Paris

fill in: The bus stop closest to your apt where you will get on, then your destination. It will show you the route to get there. Or you can do the same thing with the metro.

The site also has a big route map of where the buses go. Make sure you get a window seat nearest the driver. He can help you with getting off at the right stop. It is common courtesy to say “Bonjour” (“hello,” used in the morning and afternoon) or “Bonsoir” (“hello,” used in the evening) to the bus driver.

Best routes for sightseeing: 69, 63, 24 and 87. Take it to the end (usually not a terribly hospitable place but ask the bus driver where the bus stop is for the return trip: le retour).

To catch a bus, climb aboard and simply insert your ticket (use the same T+ ticket as the métro) in the slot machine upon entering (validate). If you don’t have a ticket, no worries, the drivers will take coins and the cost of a single ticket is about €1.90. If you’re planning to use the bus and métro often during your stay in Paris, consider purchasing a carnet, or book, of 10 tickets to save some money or check into the different. Even longer, buy a Navigo pass. And away you go!

John the Paranoid and the oldest latrine in Paris

Tour Jean Sans Peur, paris

Tour Jean Sans Peur (John the Fearless) is the ironic name for the Duke of Burgundy, who in 1409 built this defensive tower at his compound along the old city wall. As part of the Hundred Years War, he had killed the brother of the king, an act that earned him his own assassination. The stairs that spiral upward through several floors of the tour reveal interesting details of the times (the latrine for instance – the oldest in Paris). Unlike those of previous periods, they did not lead to the outside but had a duct in the wall thickness resulting in a pit below ground. They were heated by the other side of the fireplace in the room. Don’t expect a view from the top of this historic fortification. An admission is charged. Complete walking directions in your No Worries Paris guidebook.

20 rue Étienne Marcel, 75002 Paris
Métro : ligne 4, station Étienne Marcel
Bus : ligne 29, arrêt Turbigo / Étienne Marcel
